In our first installment of #KnowYourStones, we give a few facts on pearls and what to look for when purchasing.
1.Cleaning your pearls:
Wipe your pearls with a soft, lint-free cloth. The cloth can be dampened with water, or it can be dry. If damp, allow the pearls to air-dry before putting them away, and never submerge in any type of cleaner or water.
2. Storing your pearls:
Don’t store your pearls with other jewelry, pearls can be scratched easily when rubbing up against other items. Find a special spot in your jewelry box or keep them in a soft bag. Pearls should be restrung periodically so the silk or nylon cord holding them is in good shape.
3. Buying your pearls:
Pearls will always have some sort of imperfection, if you look close enough.
A pearl necklace will have some variation in stone size.
Pearls often show rings near the drill hole, visible under a microscope
Pearl strands will have depth and include a body color and an overtone color.
Pearls have luminosity and reflect light.
Pearls have some weight to them.
